Prescription Drug

Indications

For the treatment of the following infections due to susceptible organisms:

• Lower respiratory tract infections including pneumonia
• Acute bacterial otitis media
• Skin and skin structure infections
• Urinary tract infections
• Uncomplicated gonorrhea
• Pelvic inflammatory disease
• Bacterial septicemia
• Bone and joint infections
• Intra-abdominal infections
• Meningitis

As perioperative prophylaxis to reduce the incidence of postoperative infections in patients undergoing contaminated or potentially contaminated surgical procedures (e.g., vaginal or abdominal hysterectomy or cholecystectomy for chronic calculous cholecystitis in high-risk patients such as those > 70 years old, with acute cholecystitis, obstructive jaundice or common bile duct stones) and in patients for whom infection at the operative site would pose serious risk (e.g., during coronary artery bypass surgery). If signs of post-surgical infection should appear, specimens for culture should be obtained for identification of the causative organisms so that appropriate therapy may be instituted.
