How to Properly Prepare and Store Your Breastmilk

Educate yourself on the prescribed preparation and storage guidelines for breastmilk.

Breastmilk is said to provide extensive nutritional, psychological, and developmental benefits for both the mother and the infant. Not only is human milk beneficial for one’s health, it is also an economical route in reducing and avoiding additional healthcare costs.     The European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for up to six months. Given the importance of breastfeeding, it is essential to educate yourself on the prescribed preparation and storage guidelines for breastmilk so you are assured that your child is getting the most out of breastfeeding.

  • Proper sanitation should be observed when cleaning all required equipment for breastfeeding (breast pump, feeding bottles, etc.).

  • Choose a refrigerator that can keep your milk cold for long periods of time. The ideal temperature for storing human milk is between 2–4°C (35–39°F). This method of storage can keep your milk fresh for up to 48 hours.

  • Freezers are a great addition to your home if you want to store your breastmilk for long periods of time. Your freezer should be able to maintain temperatures at or below −20°C (−4°F). Frozen milk can last for up to 6-12 months or even longer depending on your freezer’s temperature.

  • Ensure that your storage and preparation tools are made of steel or food grade plastic. Look for the BPA/DEHP certification on the packaging.

  • If you need to make use of disposable or single-use items in preparing your milk, make sure that these are made with sterile materials.

  • Practice the first-in-first-out (FIFO) rotation in serving your milk.

It is important that you consult your pediatrician on the specific needs of your baby. Keep your records updated and schedule routine visits with your obstetrician.
