How to Manage Daily Stress

How to Manage Daily Stress

How you react to stressful situations can make a great difference on your mental health.

Everyone experiences stress daily due to several internal and external factors. In this article, we will discuss healthy and easy ways to manage stress.

Did you know that Manila is regarded as one of the most stressful cities in the world? According to a survey conducted last 2017, the capital of the Philippines got a score of 8.92 out of 10, with 10 being the most stressful. The study based its questions on environmental factors like pollution, traffic, availability of green spaces, financial status of citizens, public transport, and other health-related factors. So how does one deal with the daily stressors of life? Here are a few suggestions based on medical studies on stress management.

Get physical

Exercise helps you produce “feel-good” hormones called endorphins. This is the reason why you feel pumped or energized after a good run. Physical movement during a workout improves your mood and can lower symptoms of anxiety and improve your quality of sleep. Starting an exercise routine will always be the hardest part, but you will find that it gets easier once you get your groove. Consult your physician first if you haven’t tried working out before or if it’s been a while since you stepped inside a gym.

Practice mindfulness

Meditation exercises are linked to relieving stress-related symptoms. Studies state that mindfulness may refer to a state of mind or a type of training/practice.

Enroll in yoga classes in your area or join meditation sessions with your friends and family. Adapting to a “mindful” type of mindset doesn’t have to be expensive. There are many free courses online, which may help you relax and unwind during stressful situations. Alternatively, you can also download apps on your mobile phone for daily reminders to take a break from social media or to lessen screen time.

Seek help

Trusted friends and family members may be able to understand what you are going through. No one should have to go through difficult situations alone. Consider seeking medical advice if you are away from your loved ones.

Don’t binge eat and drink

The increase of stress hormones in your body called cortisol may increase your cravings for fatty and sugary treats. Stressed people may find themselves gaining more weight due to eating more than they should. Harvard Health suggests that women are more likely to turn to binge eating, while men are inclined to smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol.

Although stressful situations are unavoidable, how you deal with them during and after the situation can make a difference. Always remember that help is always one call away, whether it’s your trusted friend/family member or an appointment with your health provider.
