As parents, our focus is often on the well-being of our children. However, it's equally important to safeguard our own health—especially during the flu season. So, we shouldn’t let our guard down and instead remember that preparation, early intervention, and recognizing flu symptoms are key to fighting against the flu.

What is the flu
The flu, most commonly known as trangkaso in our country, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. The Department of Health (DOH) reports that the flu season typically kicks off in October and peaks in January and February in the Philippines, as it is most prevalent during the cooler weather.

We may catch this virus by being exposed to coughs or sneezes by an infected person and even by touching our eyes, nose, or mouth after touching surfaces contaminated with tiny droplets of flu virus-filled mucus.

How to know if we have the flu

People can experience different symptoms when it comes to the flu. For example, mom can have two symptoms like colds and fever, while dad can exhibit three like headache, sore throat, and body pain. In both of these instances, it can mean the flu.

Here are common flu symptoms to watch out for:

  • Cold
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Body pain
  • Cough from post-nasal drip

In short, if we’re already experiencing a combination of two or more of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to take immediate action.

How to prepare for flu season
Now that we know the flu virus’ manner of transmission and its common symptoms, it’s best to practice preventive measures such as proper hygiene, sufficient rest, and getting the flu vaccine together with our family. If we suspect we have the flu, let’s make sure we get the proper medication and wear masks, especially around our kids. Take note, people with the flu are most contagious in the first 3-4 days of infection.

That said, we can’t stress enough the importance of having a reliable remedy on hand. Phenylephrine HCl Chlorphenamine Maleate Paracetamol (Bioflu®) is an over-the-counter medication clinically formulated to provide relief from flu symptoms such as fever, body pain, headache, colds, cough from post-nasal drip, and sore throat. It contains a powerful trio of ingredients to help combat various flu symptoms:

  • Phenylephrine HCl - a nasal decongestant, which helps reduce nasal swelling and obstruction, making breathing easier and reducing post-nasal drip leading to cough
  • Chlorphenamine Maleate - an anti-allergy or antihistamine that relieves allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and itchy, watery eyes
  • Paracetamol - which helps to reduce fever and alleviate pain, including headaches

Phenylephrine HCl Chlorphenamine Maleate Paracetamol (Bioflu®) is also quick-acting as it can take effect in as fast as 15 minutes. This makes it an ideal solution for us parents who can't afford downtime.
