6 Allergic Rhinitis Remedies to Try at Home

Allergic rhinitis can cause discomfort and distractions that limit productivity. Read through these tips on how to keep your nasal passages clear.

Your body’s natural defense system is designed to protect you, but when it overreacts to harmless substances like pollen or dust, it can lead to allergic rhinitis, or hay fever. This causes symptoms like sneezing, congestion, and discomfort. Don’t let these symptoms take over your day! Try these simple home remedies instead.

  1. Avoiding Triggers
Identify the specific triggers that cause your allergic reactions. Common culprits include pollen, dust mites, pet fur, and mold. Once you have determined what causes your symptoms, avoid exposure. Stay indoors and use air purifiers. Clean your space thoroughly, or ask someone to help if you're experiencing symptoms. If your pet is a trigger, temporarily keep your dog or cat in a separate area.

  2. Steam Inhalation
To help ease your allergic rhinitis, start by boiling some water. Pour it into a basin. Take a clean cloth and place it over your face, creating a tent-like effect. Lean over the basin and breathe in the steam. This simple steam process inhalation can help clear and soothe your nasal passages.

  3. Warm Compress
Begin by heating a compress until it reaches a warm, comfortable temperature. Ensure it is not too hot to avoid any potential burn. Place the compress gently on your face, specifically over the nasal cavity. The nasal cavity is the hollow space within your nose that stretches from the nostrils to the back of your throat. It is responsible for filtering and moistening the air you breathe. By pressing the warm compress against this area, you can help relax the sinuses and ease congestion.

  4. Anti-Inflammation Tea
Honey and ginger are natural remedies that can offer natural relief for allergic rhinitis. Both have  anti-inflammatory properties. Honey helps reduce irritation in the throat and nasal passages. Ginger complements honey by aiding in the clearing of mucus from the respiratory tract.

To use, brew fresh ginger slices in boiling water for 10 minutes, strain, and add a spoonful of honey. This ginger tea can be enjoyed once or twice a day. Alternatively, mix equal parts of honey and freshly grated ginger and take a teaspoon of this blend daily. These remedies can help alleviate symptoms but should be used alongside, not as a replacement for, your prescribed treatments.

  5. Lots of Water
Not a fan of tea? You may want to focus on increasing your water intake instead.  When you’re well-hydrated, the mucous membranes in your nasal passages stay moist. When your nasal passages are properly hydrated, they work better in trapping and filtering out particles like pollen, dust, and pet hairs before they enter your respiratory system. This filtering action helps reduce the amount of allergens that reach your lungs and decreases the likelihood of an allergic reaction.

  6. Antihistamines
Drinking antihistamines like cetirizine is an easy way to manage symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Cetirizine works by blocking histamine, a chemical that triggers common allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and a runny nose. While cetirizine can help relieve these symptoms, it’s important to understand that it does not cure allergic rhinitis. It helps control and alleviate discomfort, but the underlying allergic condition may still persist.

If you're looking for an antihistamine to help address your allergy symptoms, you might want to try Cetirizine Dihydrochloride (Alnix®).

As the most doctor prescribed cetirizine brand, Cetirizine Dihydrochloride (Alnix®) can help with allergy symptom relief in as fast as 20 minutes. With the help of Cetirizine Dihydrochloride, this antihistamine formula helps provide relief against symptoms like sneezing, runny or itchy nose, itchy and watery eyes, and skin allergy indicators like rashes and itching.

Cetirizine Dihydrochloride (Alnix®) is available online and in leading drugstores nationwide at a suggested retail price (SRP) of Php32.50 per tablet.

If symptoms persist, consult your doctor.
